Breeding Conventional Colours in Dachshunds

Thicket: Sire of 2012 Puppies--His Puppy Picture

At Pandoradox the goal is to breed to the best of the Dachshund Standard set out by CKC and AKC.  To that end I have chosen only the standard colours of Red, and, Black and Tan for my breeding program.  Why?  Simply, the gene pool is the largest in these colours.  Therefore, much information is available about dachsies chosen for superior health and conformation background along with knowing the reputation and background of  past breeders and their dogs.  At Pandoradox I take scrupulous care in mate selection.  Only dachshunds with superior background of health, conformation,   and gentle temperament with proven championship bloodlines become proud Pandoradox Puppies.

There are some interesting articles on the colours and patterns of dachshunds that you may want to research on the web. One article  points out the reasons many “exotic” colours and patterns may NOT be quality dachshunds.  Caveat emptor!  Buyer Beware.

Tosca–Getting Ready for Dachshund Puppies

Today, Bob completed building Tosca a new whelping box for her puppies.  A proper whelping box is necessary as an aid to the mom to keep track of her new puppies (whelps) and keep them safe.   In the earliest stages  of puppy development all feeding, stimulating, and cleaning is done by the Mom.  Mom and pups will live in this box to nurse for the first 2 weeks of life.

Note the internal railing in the box.  This is a safety feature of the box that helps to prevent the mom from laying on her puppies.  As well, when the puppies begin to move around, they can only stray within the confines of the box.   Mom will often fetch her pups at feeding time,  from

Being Responsible with Dachshunds

Ch Pandoradox Thorny Thicket--Sire of New Puppies 2012
Thicket–Sire of New Puppies 2012

As an experienced breeder, I take much pride in striving to provide puppy owners with happy, rewarding dachshund experiences.   At Pandoradox the goal is to  improve the miniature dachshund breed with each litter produced.

At Pandoradox, we take breeding and puppy placement seriously.  First and foremost, only dachshunds with long histories of good health and gentle temperament are considered for mating.  Secondly, each sire and dam is selected to properly balance body type according to the breed standards set out by the Canadian Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club.  Once the puppies are born, great  effort is taken to provide the important, necessary good start in life of cuddling, socializing, and play that ultimately ensures the best possible chance for the puppy to develop into a fine, well-behaved, companion dog.   Finally, a written health guarantee is given with each puppy placement.

Regarding the championships and awards that all our dogs have received, this is the verification of many dachshund experts that we at Pandoradox continue to produce some of the finest dachshunds in both Canada and the U.S.

Regarding puppy placement, all potential buyers are interviewed extensively in order to determine that they can offer their best in care, training, and a loving home.

Dog ownership is a life-long commitment for both owner and breeder.  At Pandoradox–we are always available to  assist all our dog clients in the maximum enjoyment of their dachshund.

Happy Dachshund Older Girls in Their New Home

Occasionally I get requests for older dog placement.  Since I must make room for development of new puppies, I do place older dogs from time to time.  Tex and Scarlett were two of my older spayed pets that now live in a new fine home.  Here is a picture and story of Two Peas in a Pod, that I treasure.

“The time has gone by so quickly, things are going really well with the girls, Tex is relentless when it comes to playing ball :) It’s so much fun having a dog that likes to play, even when I’ve had a really long day at work, I’m never too tired to play ball with her, it’s so funny to watch. Half the time she doesn’t even need me there to throw it, she’s pretty good at playing ball all on her own! Scarlett of course, still just loves to be petted, I’ve learned to multi-task giving Scarlett all of the attention she craves and keeping an eye out for when Tex needs the ball thrown. These girls are two peas in a pod, some mornings I think they can’t wait for me to leave for work, they curl up together in the bed and actually turn around to look at me as if to say, “aren’t you leaving yet?”, it’s very funny!”

It is so rewarding to hear stories of successful placements!  Thanks, L., for sharing.

Re-Visiting Halle and Her Babies

Pandoradox girls are “dachshunds in waiting” for Spring 2012 puppies.  This is a picture of last year’s litter of the Halle/Thicket litter of Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme.  Halle, like all my dachsie moms was an outstanding, attentive mother to her puppies.

New puppies are expected in early March, 2012.  We are all eagerly awaiting their arrival.  Ch Pandoradox Hello Again (Halle) and Babies--DOB March 6/2011 Sire: Ch Pandoradox Thorny Thicket

Happiness is Dachshund Puppies–The Best of All Possible Worlds

Thyme--Our "Halle/Thicket" Puppy--Awarded "Best Puppy in Group"-Red Deer

Thyme is our youngest girl.  She brings us the joy of  a fun-loving , healthy dachshund with her zest for life that constantly reminds us why we continue to breed our beloved dogs.

Voltaire in his satire, Candide, symbolically referred to the cultivation of a garden as how happiness is derived from the labour of hard work and the propagation of life.  Similarly, the arrival of each new puppy litter is a reminder of how our own lives are fulfilled with the miracle of new life.

Puppies are expected at Pandoradox in March, 2012.  Again like the statement in Candide, we will enjoy “The Best of All Possible Worlds” with the blessing of healthy puppies.

Dachshund Puppies Due March 2012

Sage, Rosemary and Thyme March 29, 2011

The above picture of Halle’s puppies was so popular that I re-printed it to show you how cute the up-coming Spring 2012 puppies will be.  I kept Thyme (right-hand side) and she has grown into an outstanding dachshund–having won Best Puppy in Group at the Red Deer, Alberta show this last Fall.

Hopefully, Tosca, Flicka, and Cassie will deliver us some fine puppies in March 2012.  Please e-mail me to put your name on the reserve list. pandoradox@telus.net.

Dachshund Socialization–Thyme Meets Ava

Christmas is a perfect time to introduce your puppy to new friends.  Children love to visit puppies.  Keep in mind that the puppy needs first to “sniff” the new person.  A good idea is to gently take the little child by the hand and hold the hand below the puppy’s nose for the initial introduction.  This simple way of introducing puppy and child usually seems to stop any initial fear in both the puppy and the child.

A Special Poem to Honour Our Dogs

A Dog’s Life by Daniel Groves

A stay of execution:  one last day, your day, old Everydog, then, as they ,as or as we say, (a new trick to avoid finalities implicit in destroyed), you have to be put down, or put to sleep–the very dog who, once, would fight to keep from putting down, despite our shouts, a shoe until he gnawed to to the sole, and who would sit up, through our sleepless nights, to bark away some menace in the dark.

Can you pick up the sense of all this talk? Or do you still just listen for a walk, or else, the ultimate reward, a car?-My God, tomorrow’s ride…Well, here we are, right now.  You stare at me and wag your tail.  I stare back, dog-like, big and dumb.  Words fail. No more commands, ignore my monologue, go wander off.  Good dog.  You’re a good dog.  And you could never master, anyway, the execution as it were, of Stay

I share this expression of the ultimate sadness that we feel  at the time of losing our “best friends”.  Thank goodness for the joy that new puppies freely give to us!
