Happy Puppy Homes for Tosca’s Babies

Ian and Jenna and New Puppy Keera Tekanawa

A comment made many times when puppies are to be placed in new homes is,” You must find it difficult to let the puppies go.”   My answer is both “Yes” and “No”.   Raising the puppies and caring for them from birth certainly builds a strong attachment but there is a great reward in seeing the happiness the new puppy parents always show.  I am an adoptive mom of children and puppies. I KNOW the joy of adoption.  It is wonderful to share.

Flicka Excitement–3 Chocolate Puppies!!!

A Flicka Surprise--3 Chocolate Puppies!

One of the enormous thrills about being a dachshund breeder is the appearance of a breeding surprise.  In the March 12 litter, Flicka had 6 outstanding puppies and 3 of them were chocolate in colour!  Flicka is a shaded red and was mated with a black and tan (BlackBerry).  I knew about the chocolate colour in the pedigree of these dogs, but it was still quite unexpected.  Time for a new breeding adventure!

Tosca Puppies–6 Weeks–Perfect Vet Check, Vaccinations, and Tattoos

Tosca Puppies--6 Weeks--Vet Checked, Vaccinated,Tattooed

The excitement is building with Tosca’s beautiful puppies.  Today all the puppies had their first car ride in a crate for their visit to the veterinarian.  She checked heart, bite, patellas, and overall health.  All were found to be perfect.  The first set of puppy vaccinations were then administered along with their tattoo identifications.  This a a crucial time for the babies in their socialization and physical development.  All  puppies are proceeding exceptionally well.  In just 2 more weeks, puppy placement into new pet homes will begin.  Pandoradox pride continues!!!

Flicka and Tosca Babies–2 Weeks Apart in Age

Flicka Babies 2 Weeks Old--Eyes Opening

Tosca Baby 4 Weeks Old--Character is Emerging

This is the first time there has been 2 litters at once at Pandoradox.  The contrast of 2 weeks difference in a puppy life is amazing!  Puppies are interesting at all ages but it is just now that some of the character is showing through in Tosca’s puppies.   As you can see in Flicka’s puppies, the first few weeks are  basically “sleep and eat time”.   Tosca’s girls are just beginning to walk, play,  and eat on their own.   Now it is time to begin exploring the world!

Tosca Puppy–I’ve Got Places to Go–People to See–

Tosca's Toddler--Time to Escape the Whelping Box--3 weeks old

How quickly they change!  Now is the beginning of life’s adventure.  The puppies are exploring how to escape their whelping box to meet the world.  Socialization is starting.  This is the “cute and fun”  stage.  Bob and I spend a lot of our day playing with the puppies.  They are very entertaining.

The larger part of the work with the puppies is about to begin.  Weaning.  Up until now, Tosca has been looking after feeding, stimulating and cleaning the pups.  She has earned her freedom. It’s now my turn to take over the puppies.

Dachshund Puppies Getting Ready to Meet the World

Tosca Puppies–3 Weeks of Age–”Puppy Toddler Stage”

Each week heralds a new stage in puppy development.  This week Tosca’s puppies are becoming somewhat more active.  Exploration is beginning, now that their eyes and ears are open and they are beginning to walk–(perhaps “stagger” is a better description).  Again, learning is rapid but it remains crucial that they are protected from any negative event.  A loud noise or sudden change in routine could seriously impact proper dog personality development. Sooooo they are still in the whelping box with Tosca.  The puppies are just beginning to play, make sounds, and learn dog behaviours necessary to properly interact with humans and other dogs.

Learning to trust humans is extremely important.  We continue to carefully handle each dog every day to achieve and maintain this trust.

Dachshund Puppies–Learning to Be Your BFF

Tosca Puppy--Learning to Be Your BFF 20 Days Old

At 20 days the puppies are just opening their eyes and ears.   We cuddle each of them for a few minutes each day, since this is a crucial time for them to learn to trust humans.  The radio is played softly for them in order to work on their listening development but we are careful to not frighten them with loud noises.  This trust period is the beginning of the development of the puppies to become your Best Friend Forever (BFF).

Stage 1 of Tosca Puppy Care–SuperDog Program

Tosca Babies--Just Sleeping and Stretching

Tosca’s puppies are growing rapidly.  Tosca, Bob, and I all are part of the care program.  Tosca feeds, grooms, and stimulates the puppies.  Bob weighs and charts the weight each day. I perform a simple Early Neurological Stimulation of a few seconds handling of each dog doing 5 exercises of toe tickling, holding in an upward position,a downward position, a supine position, followed by a few seconds of thermal stimulation ( laying on cool towel).  Research by Dr. Carmelo Battaglia has shown that this type of program done from day 3 to day 16 with the puppy can give it superior advantage in such things as  better health, stronger organs, more curiosity, and be more adaptable than dogs without the early stimulation.   This is all part of raising “The Best of the Best Miniature Dachshunds”
